Song Highlight: “Survivin’”
This month’s song highlight is “Survivin’”, recorded on David Willersdorf’s Outside the Inside album in Nashville.
“I find myself reading books and watching true-life accounts about people who have survived incredible situations,” says David Willersdorf. “There are the momentous heroes of our times who have achieved great exploits, however, there are also people who have survived the odds every day and who also inspire me to keep moving forward.”
“When it came to record the song, I had a few firm ideas. However, when we tried to nestle the song in with the rest of the songs from the Outside the Inside album, it just didn’t seem to work. Producer Rick Price and I sat down and I ended up moving the song from it’s original high-energy pace into the song it is now, and it is a much better song for Rick’s advice.
“The other aspect was when fiddle player Aubrey Haynie walked into the studio to record his parts for the song. He brought an amazing touch - a real depth of experience - and as soon as I heard him play the opening riff I’d written, I knew we had something incredible. Then Aubrey played this particular part at the start of verse two and my jaw dropped. The song really shone as a result.
“From being a song that originally didn’t seem to fit, now the song has brought the whole Outside the Inside album together, as it articulates the struggle to survive that so many people face. It also creates the space for the other songs to offer an answer about gratitude, kindness and hope.”
Survivin’
Verse 1:
I was stumbling, across a desert made of sand
I’s barely breathing, seeing lightning in your hand
Chorus:
Oh, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
When it’s about surviving
Verse 2:
I was running from the visions in my head
Yeah I was jumping, like a madman in the streets
Verse 3:
I was floating across a sea the size of Rome
Yeah I was grieving about a land I’d never know
